Child
Development/Day Care Centers
It's
fun to design for kids. They need plenty of opportunity for
expression. In the day-care center at the Owen Brown Interfaith
Center in Columbia, Maryland, we designed the corridors to
be large murals upon which the children could draw and paint
or change, as they saw fit. We have found that almost all
spaces have some opportunity for creative expression.
We once asked elementary children what they thought a school
should be like. They said it should be like a big running
track with eating stations all along the way. What were they
saying? That young children are energetic and need to move
and have sporadic and frequent needs for food and energy replacement.
We try to listen, understand, and respond to their needs.
We don't want to leave staff out. Sometimes their energy is
no match for that of their charges. Their needs must be addressed,
also. Adequate down-time space and rooms that work and are
easy to supervise are important.
